How to Choose the Right Tutor for Your Child

A good tutor can help a child gain confidence and improve results. A poor match wastes time and money. Here is what to check before you choose.

1. Qualifications and experience

Ask about the tutor's education, the subjects and levels they have taught, and how long they have taught. A teacher or a university student who did well in the subject is often a good choice.

2. Match the tutor to the need

Be clear about the goal: catching up, exam preparation, or stretching a strong student. Tell the tutor the subject, the level and the topics that are difficult.

3. Start with a short trial

Try one or two sessions first. Watch how the tutor explains, how they speak to your child, and whether your child feels comfortable asking questions.

4. Agree on the plan and the fees

Agree on the days, the time, where lessons will take place, and the fees before starting. A good tutor will give you a plan and explain how progress will be checked.

5. Keep safety first

Meet the tutor yourself first. For younger children, stay nearby during lessons or choose online lessons where you can supervise. Keep communication through agreed channels and report anything that worries you.

6. Check progress

After a month, look at test scores and your child's attitude to the subject. If there is no improvement, talk to the tutor or try someone else.
